Valley Runner is a performance oriented, stock based tune with the goal of optimizing fuel economy while maximizing the entire powerband of the 3.5L 2GR-FKS engine.
Each truck running a Valley Runner file typically experiences the following:
- Smooth and predictable shift points
- 5th and 6th gear cruising on highways
- Decrease in time required to reach operating temperature
- More tame idle
- Reduction in idle spiking
- Low end response similar to a full size truck
- Improved fuel economy*
- Increase in available power
- Ability to pass emissions and safety inspections**
The tune is based on OEM CL/OL logic. It features advanced timing with adjusted air-fuel ratios to maintain environmental standards required for inspection in certain states. Atkinson Cycle compensation and improved direct injection yield a responsive low end while reducing fuel wasted by the inherent design of the 2GR-FKS platform.

I’ve been putting off my review until I’ve actually put some mileage on my tune.
When I first installed the tune I thought the tip-in was too aggressive. I don’t know if it’s me or the truck that changed, but tip-in is now perfect. The throttle is perfect. I tried some other tunes that were in the earlier days of vftuner when everyone was sharing files like crazy, and some of those throttles were ridiculous and fun, but not easy for a old man in his daily driver. The VR throttle is super responsive yet smooth. It’s hard to explain, but it feels more like a cable throttle to me, which is perfect.
Transmission shifting is miles better than it was. I used to hunt for gears even on pretty flat highways. Now I can do my highway loop to get the kid to nap and it only shifts a handful of times.
My MPGs have gone up by 2. This is averaged out over quite a few tanks, but not a ton. I will be happy to see if it keeps going up, as it seems to be.
I’m excited to see what the future brings, but so far I am extremely happy with the tune!

I just had this tune installed about a week and 400ish miles ago, and WOW, what a difference, my Taco finally drives the way it should! Shift points are better and engine response is improved. Initial outlook looks like a slight increase in MPG too! Get this tune, you won’t be disappointed.

The tune makes a difference immediately after it was flashed. The throttle became much more sensitive and didn’t feel lazy like stock. It did take a little bit to get used to.
The shifting is really smooth and quick. Doesn’t hunt for gears anymore. Not sure why stock does that.
MPGs have been the same, maybe a tad bit more efficient. Harder to tell with SoCal traffic. But for the price, can’t really go wrong!
